The climate is subtropical, with a normal annual temperature of 77°F, or 25°C, making these islands "- the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer.”

- Mark Twain

The word "Hawaii" has special meaning: "Ha" means the breath of life."wai" is the fresh water of life"i" points to the center.

Over 1200 years ago, the Polynesians traveled thousands of miles over open sea to find Hawai'i. Legend suggests that what drew these people across the ocean was the vision of paradise in the North Pacific. The native Hawaiians have long been aware of Hawaii’s healing properties. Over the years, Hawaii has become well known in the rest of the world as the healing island. Located in the heart of the Pacific ocean, it’s air and water is some of the cleanest on the planet. Attracted to the beauty and energy of the island, there are many healing art practitioners in disciplines from body work to spiritual healing. Healing and personal transformation seem to be accelerated in Hawaii’s purifying environment of subtropical sunshine, the warm waters of the Pacific, the clearing tradewinds, and the combustive creative power of the volcano. The spirit of Pelee, the goddess of the volcano, has a way of cutting through blockages and bringing to light our innermost yearnings. People travel from around the globe to experience the healing and rejuvenating energy of the island.

Philosophy

Hawaiians in ancient times followed a healthy lifestyle that included a well-balanced and nutritious diet, physical fitness achieved through both labor and sport, and a fastidious attitude toward personal hygiene. The first Westerners to visit the Islands remarked on Hawaiians' grace and strength, bright teeth and general cleanliness. Health was understood to be the result of pono, or right, living; illness followed imbalance in some aspect of life, whether spiritual, mental or physical.

A healthy lifestyle is not simply diet and exercise. It encompasses an approach to life that cultivates balance. At Belly Acres, the philosophy is to live in harmony with the environment. Much of the food consumed by the residents is grown locally. There will be opportunities to tour Belly Acres and learn about the practices they employ to create a self sustainable life style. Artisans and farmers gather weekly at the Saturday Farmers Market where there is an opportunity for community gathering and an exchange of skills and products. As much as there is a place in one’s life for discipline and hard work, there is also a necessity for relaxation and recreation. Lounging at the beach, appreciating the incredible and rare beauty of the islands, stargazing, dancing, music and spending time with friends old and new are also important for a balanced existence. At the Hawaii circus retreat we hope to cultivate an atmosphere of health, rejuvenation and community.
